Anion Definition:
A negatively charged ion is called anion.

Anion Notes:
Anion are atoms or radicals which have gained electrons. Examples of anions are bromide, chloride, fluoride, iodide, nitride, oxide, sulphide etc. The symbol of an anion has negative charge with it. Ions are typically larger in size than cations.(positively charged ions) This is because anions have extra negative charge around them. Anion is a greek word that means 'things going up'. It means that the movement of anions is upwards during electrolysis that is why they were given this name. Michael farady was the scientist who used this term for the first time. In a chemical bond, the specie that is more electronegative is identified as anion.
