Azo dyes are compounds that are coloured. In order to form these compounds, a solution containing a diazonium salt is required. Then a phenol or other aryl group is added to that solution. Azo dye is an important part of organic chemistry. It is a synthetic dye whose molecules contain two adjacent nitrogen atoms between carbon atoms. These are organic compounds that have the R-N=N-R' functional group in which R and R' are aryl groups. Azo dyes have various uses. They are used in dyeing textile fibres, specifically cotton but also silk, wool, viscose and synthetic fibres. They provide very strong and clear colours. They are also cheap and easy to use. Approximately 2000 azo dyes are available in the market.
