Acid Definition:
An acid is a proton (hydrogen ion) donor.
Cambridge International AS and A Level Chemistry by Ryan Lawrie, Roger Norris
Acid Explanation:
An acid is a substance that produces H+ ions in aqueous solutions. Examples of acids are HCl, H2SO4 etc. These are very strong acids. Acid is called a proton donor as it has the ability to donate protons. Strong acids ionize completely in dilute aqueous solutions while weak acids ionize slightly. Acid can also be called electron acceptor as it accepts electrons. It has a sour taste and reacts with metals to form bubbles of hydrogen gas. Acids can be identified as they turn blue litmus paper red. They are dangerous for skin as they cause a burning sensation. Acids are often used to remove rust and corrosion from metals. They can also be used as an electrolyte in wet cell battery.
