Activation Energy Definition:
Minimum energy that colliding particles must possess for a successful collision that results in a reaction to take place is called activation energy.
Cambridge International AS and A Level Chemistry by Ryan Lawrie, Roger Norris
Activation Energy Explanation:
Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy required by the reactants in a chemical reaction to get converted into products. This energy must be possessed by reactants to form transition state before reaching to products. This transition state is also called activated complex. Activation energy is measured in joules. It is necessary in order to proceed a reaction. For example when we strike a match on the side of a matchbox, activation energy is provided (in the form of heat produced by friction) and this energy is necessary for the chemicals in the match to ignite.
