An inorganic, non-metallic, often crystalline oxide, nitride or carbide material is termed as ceramic. Ceramics are made by taking mixtures of clay, powders, earthen elements and water. These are then shaped into desired forms. Once the shaping process is done, iceramic is fired in a high temperature oven known as a kiln. We mostly see that ceramics are covered in decorative, waterproof, paint-like substances. These substances are called glazes. Ceramic is an important material in chemistry. The products of ceramic are hard, porous and brittle. They have various uses. For example, we can make glass, cement, bricks, tiles, pottery etc using ceramics. They can also be used at many places in gas turbine engines.
