Andon Notes:
Visibility is an important aspect of Japanese way of quality control. One of the techniques of visibility is called andon which is also called warning lights. During production, when an issue is faced at one workstation, warning light on that workstation is turned on and the line stops. This stops the whole production process. All the skilled workers of the production line gathers around the workstation where the defect has occurred. The workers examine the issue together and find a solution. After the issue is resolved, the work resumes as normal. One worker at every workstation is given the authority to turn on the warning lights. This authority is called line stopping authority which needs to be carefully utilized as a single mistake in stopping the line unnecessarily will cost a lot.
