Actinomycete Definition

  • An aerobic, Gram-positive bacterium that forms branching filaments (hyphae) and asexual spores.

Prescott's Microbiology 9th Edition by Joanne Willey, Linda Sherwood, Christopher J. Woolverton

Actinomycete Explanation

Actinomycetes are filamentous and rod shaped fungus-like bacteria. The ones that are rod shaped are likely to form branching and long chains of cells. Most of the actinomycetes form colonies and true filaments, which resemble fungi; however, the diameter of these filaments is smaller than the diameter of fungi.
