Active Site Definitions:

  1. Part of an enzyme that binds the substrate to form an enzymesubstrate complex and catalyze the reaction. Also called the catalytic site.

Prescott's Microbiology 9th Edition by Joanne Willey, Linda Sherwood, Christopher J. Woolverton

  2. part of an enzyme involved in binding its substrate; the site of catalytic action.

    Essential Microbiology by Stuart Hogg

  3. Specific region on an apoenzyme that binds substrate. site for reaction catalysis.

Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Park Talaro, Arthur Talaro

Active Site Explanation:

Active site is present on the enzyme to which the substrate binds to form the enzyme-substrate complex. When the enzyme-substrate complex is formed, a chemical reaction occurs which helps to form the products. The residues present in the active site form temporary bonds with the substrate molecule and some other residues catalyze the reaction of substrate to produce products.
