Colony-Forming Unit (CFU) is a unit that estimates the number of viable fungal or bacterial cells in a sample. Viable is the ability of cells to divide and multiple by binary fission under the controlled conditions. Counting with CFUs requires growing and culturing the microbes and only the viable cells are counted in contrast with the examining done by microscope in which all the cells, living or dead, are counted.
